A-list star, Angelina Jolie almost cried as she accepted the Academy’s 2013 Governors Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Accompanied by her longtime partner and son, Maddox, Angelina accepted the award, paying tribute to her family and late mom, Marcheline.

The Honorary award was presented by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at an untelevised ceremony held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013.

In her acceptance speech at the Hollywood and Highland Center, Hollywood, CA., Angelina thanked Brad Pitt whose “support and guidance make everything possible” for her.

Also in the audience was Maddox who she promised while delivering her speech that she would not cry since she did not want to embarrass him.

As Angelina talked about the refugees, the Tourist actress said meeting them has changed her life.

When I met survivors of war and rape, I knew how fortunate I was,” Jolie was quoted as saying by Entertainment Weekly, before adding, “I realized how sheltered I had been. I was determined to never be that way again. We all in this room are so fortunate.”

The mother of six continued in her emotional speech describing a woman with the same talents and desires as most of the artists in the audience and how she fails to find her ways to do as she hoped to being “trapped in a refugee camp.”

Angelina added, “I don’t understand why I have this life and a woman across the world who has the same work ethic, same desires, and would make better films is stuck in a refugee camp.”

Giving her and those like her “voice” is what Angelina said she hopes to do.

“She has no voice. She worries about what her children would eat, how to keep them safe, and if they can return home. I don’t know why this is my life and that is hers. I don’t understand. But I will do my best to be in service to them. If my mother was alive she would be proud,” Angelina promised.

The Governors Awards is an annual award ceremony initiated by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to present three major honorary awards: the Academy Honorary Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

It began on November 14, 2009 and has since presented artists honorary awards, including Angelina Jolie.

Jolie according to the Guardian Express Las Vegas, has been part of more than 40 field missions organized by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
