Taecyeon Reveals JYP Entertainment Banned Him to Play As Villain in K-Dramas: 'I had to have a clean image'

Despite being a successful idol-actor, Ok Taecyeon revealed that he also struggled to fulfill his dream drama role as his then agency restricted him in doing so.

2PM's Taecyeon Revealed Why He Struggled to Book His Dream K-Drama Role

Ok Taecyeon is a successful idol-actor and starred in multiple hit dramas, such as "Vincenzo," "Blind," "Save Me," "Bring It On, Ghost," and more. He currently headlines the rom-com series "Heartbeat."

The 2PM member appeared as a guest in DIVE Studios' Daebak Show, hosted by Eric Nam. There, 2PM's Taecyeon talked about his acting career, from his first role in "Cinderella's Stepsister," to watching his own dramas, to landing his dream roles.

As an all-rounder, who has almost done everything, Taecyeon was asked if there's something he hasn't done yet and wants to do soon. The idol-actor took the chance to share his acting journey.

He explained that he had been dreaming of portraying a villain role since he got into acting. However, his former agency, JYP Entertainment, banned him as they wanted him to maintain a clean image.

"I am just saying a literal fact. The company wouldn't let me do the antagonist role. I had to have a clean image. But at that time I want to try playing as a villain or like I could be a rebel, but you don't want to be like a serial killer."

Ok Taecyeon Fulfills Antagonist Role in 'Vincenzo'

Looking back, the actor understood why JYP Entertainment had restricted him from doing villain roles. He could potentially receive hate, which would also affect the entire 2PM group.

Meanwhile, in 2018 when Taecyeon officially parted ways with JYP Entertainment and signed with 51K Entertainment, new doors opened for the idol-actor. This allowed him to finally fulfill his dream role.

In 2021, he played as the main antagonist in the high-rated K-Drama "Vincenzo," a psychopath and serial killer Jang Jun Woo/Jang Han Seok.

"In 'Vincenzo,' I did some villain roles, so I was very happy and lucky to have that role as one of my works."

Catch Ok Taecyeon in his ongoing K-drama "Heartbeat," alongside Won Ji An, every Monday and Tuesday on KBS.

The series started garnering popularity and even entered the Top 10 OTT Global Chart.
