The latest news out of the popular Gotham TV series is the casting of Dexter's David Zayas as one of the nastiest villains in the city. Zayas will be joining the Batman TV series as big mobster boss Salvatore Maroni, or  Sal Maroni.

In the Gotham universe, Maroni started out as a street drug thug, who -- by way of his violent appetite and matching ambition, climbed his way to the top of the city's drugs and criminal world.

Although Carmine Falcone is still the number one mob boss in Gotham, Maroni is considered a close second in the city's criminal industry. In fact Maroni will later on gain infamy as the villain behind the disfigurement of District Attorney Harvey Dent's face, which catalyzed his metamorphosis into another villain, Two-Face.

But before his rise to become one of the most terrifying Gotham villains, viewers will get to watch him on the Gotham TV series, and see his journey into the dark side.

Maroni will no doubt clash with the young James Gordon, on which the series revolves around on. The Gotham TV series stars The O.C.'s Ben Mc Kenzie as a young James Gordon, and it follows his story as he makes journey to becoming the city's commissioner. The series  also features Bruce Wayne (played by David Mazouz) as a young boy who has just witnessed his parents perish in a random street mugging.

Zayas will be joining the interesting cast of characters of Gotham: Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Catwoman (Camren Bicondova). Working alongside James Gordon is Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue).

The actor is best known for his work on the serial killer-themed TV series Dexter, but he has also appeared in films such as The Expendables, Skyline and Michael Clayton.
