Netflix Encounters Controversy Over "The School Nurse Files" Subtitles

Netflix original K-drama "The School Nurse Files" came across a dispute over its first trailer due to profanity in subtitles.

"The School Nurse Files" is a story about a health teacher named An Eun Young who has the ability to see jelly like monsters that are present in the school. By the use of her toy knife and BB gun, she eradicates them with the help of her fellow teacher .

In the previous trailer released by Netflix, teacher Ahn Eun Young was surprised with the strange things that appear inside the school. In the scene she was holding a specimen and said, "FXXX. What the XXX is this?" (translated in English subtitles).

It was then discovered that the said scene in the drama was not part of the video that was sent to the Video Ratings Committee or known as Korea Media Rating Board. In regards to this, viewers then gave criticism on the said issue.

A Netflix representative commented, "We recognized that the teaser video of "The School Nurse Files" was released with a different version from the one submitted to the ratings committee found to be unacceptable. We have deleted it in all channels on the same day we received the news. This includes channels in Naver Cast, Kakao TV, and YouTube has been modified in regards to the subtitles."

Netflix caters a worldwide audience and they have been receiving numerous complaints in regards to the shows that are released in other countries.

This is not the only time that Korean viewers found subtitles are incorrectly interpreted. Another case is for the hit series "Kingdom 2" when it was released in Taiwan the version title was "Ishi Chosun" in Chinese characters.

The said titles correspond to a different related Japanese meaning that may depict a language that could confuse viewers overseas.

Following this, Netflix subtitle controversy has been ongoing and this is already the fourth complaint this year. Though Netflix responded to their side of the story and changed what is needed the issue keeps repeating.

As Netflix is a worldwide streaming platform they should be attentive and pay attention to such concerns always.

"The School Nurse Files" starring Jung Yoo Mi as the nurse teacher Ahn Eun Young and Nam Joo Hyuk as the Chinese teacher Hong In Pyo. Directed by Lee Kyoung-mi and is written by Chung Se-rang who is the original author of the novel series.

"The School Nurse Files" will premiere on September 25.
