RECAP: 'Awaken' Makes a Heartbreaking Ending
tvN's "Awaken" has ended and has left viewers shocked, and at the same time, heartbroken for its unexpected twist!
Here's is the recap as to how the series ended its sixteenth episode.
The last episode started with a confrontation between Jung Woo and Oh Jung Hwan, telling him he is the president and one of the experiments successfully worked and he was shockingly abducted with the help of Kim Min Jae. He was then brought to their hideout and was asked why he was taking the pill. He revealed that it keeps him looking youthful but needs to be taken every six hours.
They eventually took it from him. When Dr. Jo saw Dr. Gong tied Son Min Ho, she asked him why and he explained that Jung Woo has given him the formula.
At once, they tested it on him. Unfortunately, he died and made a conclusion that she must gather her son's blood to get a better and successful outcome. Dr. Jo contacted Oh Jung Hwan and suspected that something is wrong by listening to the sound of his voice. She immediately ordered the military to kidnap Jamie and bring her over.
The two then decided to meet. Hye Won gathered the rest of the team. Jung Woo tries to convince everyone else not to intervene but the outcome appeared otherwise. All were willing including the third and the fourth child to take them down.
The next day, they separated into two teams. One team, together with Jae Wong, was bound to hack the system and destroy the data they had worked so hard for by planting bombs at every door they entered.
The other team with Ji Wan went to ask for help from the police informing them of what is happening. They eventually convinced the chief of police and had a SWAT headed to the location. Jung Woo tipped reporter Lee and headed directly to the location to cover the situation live.
Sadly, Jung Woo surrendered to his mom making the rest of them held at gunpoint. His mom takes a sample of his blood while Hye Won inserted a USB into the computer to allow the other team to hack the system.
They continued with the experiment. Oh Jung Wan panicked when he discovered that his medications were taken by Jung Woo so the doctor quickly initiated that they administer the shot.
Oh Jung Wan tried to escape but got surrounded by the police, and before the police caught him, he aged abruptly and died before them. When Jung Woo's mother tried to administer the shot, he shouted not to do it and asked her if she ever regretted her wrongdoing, but answered, "Never," and exclaimed, "That's why you were born. You are my monster."
This triggered flashbacks and he started to transform into a different, evil personality. They just discovered that he has DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). He strangled Hye Won but eventually came back to his senses when she yelled that he would come back. He suggested quickly that they leave since bombs were about to go off.
Just when everyone left the room, he locked himself with his mother but wished that his sister will live a happy life. His mother begged that they continue with the experiment and administered the shot to herself but he declined and said in tears, "I should have never been born," before the bomb exploded.
Hye Won's father was arrested refusing the accusation. Other high profile executives were also taken into custody.
When Jamie asked Hye Won if they had found the body of his brother and mother, she replied that are still looking for them. When Hye Won checked on the ambulance, she found a lollipop and a ticket to Yeosu. This prompted her to check the CCTV and discovered it was the same ambulance. She hinted that Jung Woo might be alive and lived somewhere in Yeosu and asked reporter Lee to investigate.
Three months later, Hye Won got promoted and reporter Lee updated her about the case.
Lee told her that a villager saw a man carrying a woman and told the villager it was her mother. The mother even had the chance to tell the villager to kill her.
Lee then visited the place but found no one. Hye Won, later on, called her team to catch a criminal. That criminal had an argument and pulled out a knife and held a person hostage. Hye Won suddenly got reminded of something familiar that happened in the past and saw a man who looked like him. The last scene ended Jung Woo eating a lollipop.
