‘Princess Aurora’ Senseless Representation of Sexual Minorities

Is the love of sexual minorities a joke? MBC Everyday Drama "Princess Aurora" has transformed a gay man into a straight man in one day, which resulted in the audiences frowning upon the unjustifiable development of the storyline.

On the 134th episode of "Princess Aurora" which aired on Thursday, November 28, 2013, the previously gay character Natasha, played by Song Won Geun, appeared again as a straight man. On this episode, Natasha said to his ex boyfriend Park Sa Gong, played by Kim Jung Do, "Congratulate me. I became a man. Girls look beautiful to me now."

Park Sa Gong, surprised, asked, "How?" And Natasha jokingly said, "You want to know why? Buy me food." Natasha has been depicted as a somewhat feminine homosexual man. However, on this episode, he revealed his changed gender identity by restoring his masculinity through his manly hairstyle and a deeper voice.

This transformation of a gay man into a straight person dumbfounded the audiences, since many believed that this transformation of a gay person's identity into a straight one came from the lack of understanding on the homosexuals, who are socially minorities. This transformation, in addition to the fact that the drama "Princess Aurora" has been portraying the homosexuals in a ridiculous way in the drama made the audiences feel uncomfortable.

Some have said "Princess Aurora" has hurt the sexual minorities who even at this moment have a lot of worries and wounds. The senseless depiction of the homosexuals in "Princess Aurora" in addition to the fact that previous episodes of "Princess Aurora" characters have said lines such as "I refuse to receive chemotherapy because cancer cells have a life as well," or have portrayed a miserable, horrible life of Aurora because of her sisters in law.

Although MBC Everyday Drama "Princes Aurora" has already been branded with a lack of compelling stories, the fact that the drama deals with stories that could hurt the social minorities is not a good sign of a good drama. Although it is not sure how the drama writer Im Sung Han would portray Natasha's transformation from a gay man into a straight man, the absurd situations that has already been depicted has already exceeded the imaginations of the audiences.

Of course, the compelling acting and the unique character of Song Won Geun, who plays Natasha in "Princes Aurora," has already garnered the love of audiences, and the audiences are welcoming his reappearance into the drama. However, Natasha's transformation from a gay man into a straight man has branded "Princes Aurora" as a drama that ridicules the audiences.
