Kim Hye Soo dishes on her reunion project with veteran actress Kim Hae Sook, and what drew her to play a royal in "The Queen's Umbrella."

After the success of the Netflix series "Juvenile Justice," the award-winning actress returns with a different role as she stars as the King's wife in tvN's new drama. As the series gears up for its highly-anticipated release, the 52-year-old star talks about her experience filming the series and headlining her first historical K-drama in 20 years.

Kim Hye Soo on What Drew Her to Play Joseon's Queen

Welcoming her fans with an interesting character as she plays Queen Im Hwa Ryeong, a wife to a great king and a doting mother to five troublemaking sons, Kim Hye Soo shared what made her say yes to playing the royal role.

In an interview as cited by a media outlet, the award-winning top star said the character and the storyline's uniqueness "captured" her heart because "The Queen's Umbrella" is not a typical historical series.

"The reason I chose 'The Queen's Umbrella' is clear. I chose the project 'The Queen's Umbrella' because it is a new historical drama, has an interesting story, and because of my character's strength," she explained.

Giving a brief hint about what to expect from her character, Kim Hye Soo described Queen Im Hwa Ryeong as someone who harbors a "strong power of love" and will do whatever it takes to protect her loved ones.

Interestingly, viewers will get to see a different queen in Im Hwa Ryeong.

"She is a character who behaves actively and clearly conveys her intentions and emotions," Kim Hye Soo furthered, explaining more about her role, adding that Queen Im Hwa Ryeong is known to be 'the person with the quickest feet in the palace.'"

While the top star is known for her versatile K-dramas, may it be action, thriller or romance, "The Queen's Umbrella" is Kim Hye Soo's first historical series in 20 years after landing the titular role in the 2002 K-drama "Jang Hee Bin" opposite Park Sun Young and Jeon Kwang Ryul.

The forthcoming series is also her first historical project in 10 years after joining the cast of the 2013 film "The Face Reader."

Interestingly, besides making a comeback starring in saeguk K-dramas, Kim Hye Soo also reunited with veteran actress Kim Hae Sook in "The Queen's Umbrella."

The two renowned actresses first worked together in the 2012 movie "The Thieves." After 10 years, they met again playing the role of queen and the king's mother in a new tvN series.

Kim Hye Soo hints that there will be a lot of confrontations between Queen Im Hwa Ryeong and Queen Dowager, played by the 66-year-old star. She gave viewers a sneak peek of what to expect in their connection playing top royals.

"The collision and the mental fight between these two women were incredibly strong and interesting," she said.

The 16-part episode historical K-drama is slated to premiere on October 15 and will be the newest weekend series airing every Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile, "The Queen's Umbrella" can be streamed via tvN, while English subtitles are available on Netflix.
