Webtoon-Based K-drama That Gained Popularity This 2023: ‘Moving,’ ‘Bloodhounds’

Hallyu never fails to give viewers a slew of notable K-dramas every year. In 2023, broadcast networks and streaming platforms will showcase several options for their audiences. Interestingly, some of it is based on webtoons.

You'll know it will be a good series if it is an adaptation from a webtoon, and with that, here are the top 5 webtoon-based K-dramas that made a mark in 2023. 

'Moving'

Based on Kang Full's original webtoon, "Moving," it depicts the story of teenagers who harbor the same superpowers as their parents. However, as they discover more of their abilities, they are being chased down by dark forces who want to eliminate them.

Apart from the entertaining story, viewers were delighted to see a roster of talented stars, from lead stars to supporting roles.

"Moving" cast includes top stars Han Hyo Joo, Ryu Seung Ryong, Jo In Sung, and up-and-coming celebrities like Lee Jung Ha, Go Yoon Jung, and Kim Do Hoon. 

"Moving" airs every Wednesday via Disney+ and Hulu. 

'Mask Girl'

Another K-drama that is currently trending in the second half of the year is "Mask Girl."

Starring Go Hyun Jung and Nana, they both play the role of Kim Mo Mi in different timelines.

Adding to the list of cast are Ahn Jae Hong, Yeon Hye Ran, and more, with the special participation of U-KISS' Lee Jun Young. 

"Mask Girl" showcases the life of an ordinary woman who is insecure about herself. She sought redemption by creating her alter ego, the masked character, as she works as an internet broadcast jockey.

'Bloodhounds'

Despite the K-drama creating controversy ahead of its release because of its cast members, "Bloodhounds" sparked a huge craze after it was released on June 9 via Netflix. 

Based on the webtoon of the same name, it follows the life of amateur boxer Kim Geon Woo, who got caught up in an incident involving the city's top loan shark. 

"Bloodhounds" stars Woo Do Hwan and Lee Sang Yi as the unbeatable duo, Kim Geon Woo and Hong Woo Jin, as well as veteran actor Heo Joon Ho, who takes on the role of Chairman Choi Tae Ho. Interestingly, Park Sung Woong takes on the viscous evil loan shark Kim Myung Gil. 

'The Killing Vote'

Another current webtoon that is gaining the attention of viewers is "The Killing Vote."

The unique premise of the K-drama instantly captivates the interest of the public. The 12 part episode K-drama focuses on the mysterious masked man named Gaetal who prosecutes suspects who get away with the law despite the heinous crimes that they committed.

"The Killing Vote" is based on the webtoon created by Um Se Yoon, who is also the genius behind "Tomorrow." It stars Lim Ji Yeon, Park Hae Jin, and Park Sung Woong as the main leads. 

'Black Knight'

After his K-drama comeback through "Our Blues," Kim Woo Bin once again proved his versatility as an actor after portraying the elite courier in "Black Knight."

Taking on the role of the legendary 5-8, delivery drivers known as the knights protect and deliver essential packages to the public.

"Black Knight" stars Song Seung Heon as the antagonist and rookie actor Kang Yoo Seok as Kim Woo Bin's sidekick.
