Lee Young Ae Receives Flak After Heartfelt Donation
On October 3, Lee Young Ae made headlines after making a 50 million KRW (37,000 USD) donation to the construction of the Presidential Memorial of a former political figure.
Many fans criticized the veteran actress for her alleged support to a dictator. The memorial will be built in honor of Rhee Syngman, the first President of South Korea from 1948 to 1960.
In a letter addressed to the foundation, Lee Young Ae defended Rhee Syngman by describing him as "South Korea's foundation to freedom."

This left a bitter taste in the public's hearts as the actress completely disregarded the former president's mistakes. In Lee Young Ae's defense, she stated that she's not covering up history.
"The mistakes will remain mistakes in history," she said. "But if we live without hate while looking at their contributions to the country, we can live in a more peaceful country."

Lee Young Ae reiterated that the purpose of her donation is to thank the former president for protecting the country from North Korea's armed invasion, which didn't sit entirely right for some.
In addition to Rhee Syngman, Lee Young Ae also sponsored the memorial foundation of past presidents like Park Chung Hee, Kim Young Sam, Kim Dae Jung and Roh Moo Hyun.
