Call her Cinderella, Maybe? Carly Rae Jepsen is set to make her Broadway debut in Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella starting Feb. 4, 2014 according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The singer, who became famous last year with her hit "Call Me Maybe," will replace Laura Osnes for the role. Osnes is exiting the show after a yearlong run.
Carly Rae Jepsen will star in the musical production for 12 weeks.
According to an interview with The New York Times, Carly Rae Jepsen grew up with dreams of acting on Broadway and performed in high school productions of "Annie," "Grease" and "The Wiz" in British Columbia before turning her focus to creating her own music. She also attended the Canadian College of Performing Arts after high school.
"It was essentially musical theater training with studies in singing, dancing and acting, my favorite part of the school year was our trip to New York, where we met Broadway performers and toured the theaters." She cited her love of Cinderella's story as a reason for choosing this particular production as her Broadway debut. "It's so hopeful and inspiring," she added. "I've always been one to believe in the impossible, so I relate to her character completely."
Despite losing some steam after the summer, the show has been a solid earner since it began performances in January at the Broadway Theatre, grossing $44.3 million through the week ending Dec. 22. The production which was adapted by playwright Douglas Carter Beane from the original 1957 Rodgers & Hammerstein television musical that starred Julie Andrews, earned a total of nine Tony nominations earlier this year.
Carly Rae Jepsen's casting adds another star name to the production following the recent news that Fran Drescher also will join the show starting Feb. 4. Drescher is set to play Cinderella's stepmother.
Carly Rae Jepsen, who earned two Grammy nominations, last year for "Call Me Maybe," finished her first headline tour of the U.S. earlier this year; she also is working on a new album targeted for release in 2014.
