Jo Yuri is stepping into one of her most challenging roles yet in the third season of Netflix's global hit Squid Game — and she's doing it while portraying a pregnant contestant.

At a press conference held on June 9 at the Dragon City Hotel in Yongsan, Seoul, the singer-turned-actress joined creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and cast members, including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, and Im Si-wan, to discuss the upcoming season, which premieres on June 27.
Jo, who plays Joon-hee — the youngest participant in the new round of deadly games — said her character's pregnancy adds intense emotional and physical layers to the already brutal storyline.
"Joon-hee is pregnant during the games, which means she experiences significant physical and emotional hardship," Jo said. "I plan to show a strong and resilient spirit through this character, so please look forward to it."
The third installment picks up in the aftermath of Season 2, with protagonist Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returning to the games on a personal mission.
The series will also explore new angles of the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and introduce a fresh cast of contestants fighting for survival in an even deadlier iteration of the twisted competition.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk emphasized that while Squid Game is steeped in social commentary, his goal is not to preach, but to provoke thought.
"I never intended to give a specific message, but rather to raise questions," Hwang said. "
In a capitalist society marked by extreme competition, I wanted to ask whether humanity can create a better, more sustainable world for future generations."
Season 2 of Squid Game was the most-watched OTT series in the U.S. during the 2024–2025 season, cementing the show's status as a cultural phenomenon.
With Season 3's premiere just weeks away, fans and critics alike are eager to see how the franchise raises the stakes — and how Jo Yuri's powerful new role contributes to the drama.
Netflix has not confirmed plans for a fourth season, but Hwang teased the possibility of a spin-off.
