Korean actresses Han So Hee and Jeon Jong Seo's upcoming film PROJECT Y has ignited fierce debate online, with many South Korean netizens calling for a boycott, despite its recent selection for the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Set in Gangnam's underground nightlife scene, PROJECT Y is an R-rated crime drama centered on two women—played by Han and Jeon—who work in the adult entertainment industry and plot to steal 8 billion KRW in gold.

The film has drawn criticism for its perceived glamorization of sex work and what some see as recycled, provocative storytelling.

Critics particularly take issue with the use of "hwa-ryu-gye" women, a Korean euphemism for sex workers, arguing that the portrayal reinforces harmful stereotypes.

"Why are we still making movies about sex workers and gangsters?" one top comment reads. Others accuse the film of contributing to the decline of Korean cinema.

The casting has added fuel to the fire. Han So-hee, once hailed as Korea's rising star, is currently embroiled in a public controversy involving actor Ryu Jun-yeol and ex-girlfriend Hyeri.

Jeon Jong-seo faces past accusations ranging from school bullying to reportedly rude behavior toward the press. Their combined reputations have led some viewers to question the film's motives.

Still, supporters argue that the gritty premise aligns with both actresses' on-screen strengths and may resonate more with international audiences.

TIFF's recognition hints at artistic merit, though it remains to be seen whether domestic reception will soften.

As backlash intensifies, PROJECT Y stands at the center of a larger cultural debate: Can provocative art coexist with public accountability in today's media landscape?
