Actor Ross is actually the son of iconic diva Diana Ross. He's 25-years-old and plays Charlie Selby in the TV show 90210, and will be playing Mesalla in the upcoming two Hunger Games: Mockingjay films.
Singer Simpson is older at 29. She was previously married to Fall Out Boy singer Pete Wentz, with whom she has a five-year-old son, Bronx Mowgli. She dated Boardwalk Empire actor Vincent Piazza after but it eventually ended, and she started dating Ross in June last year.
The young couple certainly moved fast. The two went public with their relationship in July, and Simpson met Ross' mother in August, after the latter's concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Seven months later, they're announcing their engagement. However, they are said to have been friends for a long time before they started dating.
Jeweler Neil Lane, who designed the massive ring, has given People magazine a few details on how the sparkler came about. The designer said the inspiration for the sparkler came from his vintage archive collection - Lane and Ross just added more to it. Made up of a marquise-cut diamond, small rubies, and 140 white diamonds set in platinum and gold, the end result was an enormous, five-carat sparkler. Lane said of Ross, "He took it very seriously and it was a wonderfully intense process."
