New Zealand Singer Lorde's number 1 hit 'Royals' scored the Song of the Year award in the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. She also won Best Pop Solo Performance for the song at the prestigious night in Los Angeles.

Royals made the Kiwi pop star an international sensation when it landed on number 1 on the Bilboard Charts, making her the youngest person to have a number one hit in the US for 26 years.

Awkwardly accepting the speech in obvious surprise with co-songwriter Joel Little, she was quoted on stage: "Thank you everyone who has let this song explode... it´s been kind of mental." She continued by thanking her fellow nominees: "This is the one thing that I did not expect about tonight so thank you so much ... I've been inspired by all of your vocal performances at some point in my life."

The single bested rival songs "Same Love" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, "Roar" by Katy Perry, "Just Give Me A Reason" by Pink and "Locked Out Of Heaven" by Bruno Mars in the category.

Though the well-deserved adoration for the 17-year old Lorde's Grammy win was rampant in the social media sites, no one was more pleased and surprised than her parents.

"As a mum when I sat there I was in shock. I was absolutely in shock," Sonja Yelich, Lorde's Mother, shared to Radio New Zealand's Morning Report. "It's so exciting. We're so proud of her."

After the awards show, Mrs. Yelich disclosed that Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O´Connor, attended the Universal Music's event along a couple of after-parties before celebrating with her close friends and family in her hotel room.

Asked how her daughter is handling the win, Mrs. Yelich told the morning show: "She's a very calm person and she handles these things very well. She will never get flustered, maybe internally, but she has a very cool appearance externally. It's another day today for her."

Lorde along with her proud family took the plane back to New Zealand a day after the Grammy Awards night because Lorde is set to perform at the Laneway Festival in Auckland this January 29.
