Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City have been ordered by a court to pay $800,000 in damages for their song, "Good Time." This comes after a lawsuit filed by singer Allyson "Ally" Burnett against Jepsen, Owl City's Adam Young, songwriters Matt Thiessen and Brian Lee, plus some publishing companies and publishing rights groups.

Burnett, who is known for co-writing and singing the theme for MTV's The Seven, sued the group in October 2012 for ripping off her song called, "Ah, It's A Love Song." The Alabama-based singer and songwriter, who released the song in 2010, said that "Good Time" copied a "hook" and a "unique vocal motif" from "Ah, It's A Love Song." The complaint stated that the said motif, which is repeated throughout the song, "had a catchy pop vibe that sticks to people's heads." The lawsuit further says that the hook is "a musical idea, often a short riff, passage, or phrase, that is used in popular music to make a song appealing and to catch the ear of the listener. A hook can be either melodic or rhythmic, and frequently incorporates the main motif or theme for a piece of music." Burnett also said that her reputation will be damaged as people may assume that she copied her own motif from the songwriters she was suing instead of the other way around.

TMZ reported that Burnett won the lawsuit on Thursday. BMI Publishing, who collects the royalties for the disputed song will be paying up $804,156 to Burnett.

"Ah, It's A Love Song" appears on Burnett's album called The Takeover, and is also licensed to MTV shows Friendzone, and The Hills. On the other hand, the collaborative song "Good Time" came out in June 2012. It appeared on Owl City's album, The Midsummer Station, and Jepsen's album, Kiss. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, and had been used in TV shows such as The Office and 90210. Jepsen is known for her hit single, "Call Me Maybe," while Owl City is famous for their number one song, "Fireflies."
