The most unexpected-awkward moment of 2014 may have happened with Vanity Fair editor, Graydon Carter, comparing actress Gwyneth Paltrow to North Korean dictator, Kim Jung-Un.
The conflict began when there was rumor that Vanity Fair had been working on an "epic takedown" of Gwyneth Paltrow in the Editor's Letter from the March 2014 Hollywood Issue.
Carter addressed the issue by stating that contributing editor, Vanessa Grigoriadis, was commissioned to write an essay on the "hate/love-fest that encircles Gwyneth Paltrow." He continues by stating that "it was such a far cry from the almost mythical story that people were by now expecting-the 'epic takedown,' filled with 'bombshell' revelations-that was bound to be a disappointment."
The Vanity Fair editor explains that the "delightfully written" Gwyneth Paltrow story is actually not the one that anti-Gwynethites are expecting and hoping for. Complications with the situation continue due to the amount of mail and attention this one story has generated.
The Shakespeare in Love actress boycotted the magazine in order to prevent them from releasing any sort of "epic take-down" that would stain her perfect, wholesome image. According to Carter, the actress "asked that friends and family not speak to Vanity Fair about her, or about anything else ever again. Ever. Never" then continued with "Kim Jong-Un couldn't have issued a more blanket demand."
Ultimately, Carter and Paltrow spoke on the phone when the lifestyle guru explained her "over-reaction" to the issue. Carter explains "At one point, she asked my advice as to what to do to get the 'haters' on the side. I suggested putting on 15 pounds. I joked that it works for me. She replied I had put on much more than that. Which I thought was fair and funny."
The battle still wasn't over after the phone call when Vanity Fair began receiving harsh criticism for "caving in" to Gwyneth Paltrow.
Drama was added even further when rumor began circulating that "Gwyneth had coerced George Clooney into not being on the cover" which is clearly false, evident from the March issue featuring Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The question still remains unanswered as to why the world seems to hate-love Gwyneth. Hopefully it'll be answered without any more unnecessary drama that has spewed from the "Gwyneth Paltrow saga."
