The return of Moriarty in the final episode of Sherlock Holmes Season 3 " The Final Vow" is a complete shocker to avid viewers which led to a lot of speculations if it was only meant to mess up the plotline.
But when asked by Vulture about the sudden comeback, Producer Steven Moffat admitted that it was part of a larger plan.
"I can't really say what we're doing with that, but there is no last-minute whim in this. We've had what we're going to do with Moriarty in place from before the second season. Exactly what we're going to do. I remember talking it through with Andrew Scott, who plays Moriarty. Wait and see what's going to happen," the man behind the BBC show explained.
There were a lot of new clues on the last season that can lead to bigger story angles like an off-hand mention of another brother courtesy of Mycroft. Though Moffat was vague about giving out some Sherlock Holmes Season 4 spoilers, he explained that brotherhood plays a central theme. "Wait and see," he chided.
In an interview with IGN, Sherlock Holmes director disclosed: "He's quite close to his brother, from the very start -- that's not something that's changed -- from the very, very beginning of 'A Study in Pink.'"
(Mycroft) is trying to look out for him. He's worried about him. He's worried about what his junkie little brother might do next, as you would be in real life. If your little brother or something wanted to be a detective, not a junkie anymore, now a detective, because crime is really fascinating, you'd be worried. He's worried, that's all," He explained.
Benedict Cumberbatch character's sort-of relationship with Janine might also be a possible spoiler on Season 4 as the producer saw chemistry with actress Yasmine Akram.
"I loved Yasmine's performance as Janine -- she still likes him in the end. At some point, you know, if Sherlock Holmes has to go to a function and he needs a date, he'll phone her up. Now, he'll not expect her to say no. She'll be very cross with him, but she'll show up, and they'll have a good time. They will, because he likes her," closed Moffat.
