Jimmy Fallon bid farewell to the "Late Night" slot after five years of hosting the show with Andy Samberg and The Muppets guesting on the last episode.
The Late Night show host will take over the Tonight Show comes February 17, replacing Jay Leno.
The final episode kicked off with a lively number from Buckwheat Zydeco and The Roots performing Bob Dylan's "On a Night Like This" before launching to his opening monologue, even joking that he was "really going to miss being on TV at 12:37."
Fallon's last monologue also featured his show's stats including the fact that 10,000 monologue jokes have been delivered in 969 episodes.
Fallon turn emotional in expressing his thank you's to his house band The Roots, the show's staff, former late night show hosts Letterman and O' Brien and finally to his fans, saying:
"I want to thank the fans. I can't believe it. This didn't exist five years ago. There was no such thing as this show five years ago. Isn't that crazy to even believe that? It means the world to me. You make me so happy. Thank you so much."
On his last segment, Announcer Steve Higgins and Fallon exchanged some favourite memories of being on the show. Higgins, who have worked with the now-former "The Late Night" host for 15 years since his SNL days expressed his admiration to his colleague, assuring him: "You're going to be so good because you're nice, you're sweet, (and) you're super hilarious. You are perfect for this job."
He added: "you are the most talented dude I've ever met in the history of show business."
The last performance of the night did not disappoint. Fallon, ever the modest comedian, stayed behind the drum kit as final musical guest the Muppets rocked out The Band's hit "The Weight."
As the last chords rang, Fallon exited without a goodbye bow and strode directly to the next studio where the crew of his new show "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" welcomed him with hugs.
"Saturday Night Live" veteran Seth Meyers will be the new "Late Night" anchor which will be in competition with CBS's The Late Late Show with Ferguson starting on February 24.
