About Last Night: Kevin Hart’s Rom-Com Remake Gets Mixed Reviews But Is More Loved Than Stand Up ‘Let Me Explain’

The reviews are in for Kevin Hart's "About Last Night."

The rom-com, a remake of the 1986 movie, has quite the star-studded cast, including Kevin Hart himself and actors Michael Ealy, Regina Hall and Joy Bryant.

"About Last Night" shares a similar premise with the 1986 version.

Set in downtown Los Angeles (not Chicago, like the original), the plot is about the "trials and tribulations" of dating in the city.

Leslye Headland, who wrote the "Bachelorette," adapted the screenplay.

The Boston Herald states that the "About Last Night" remake is "noteworthy for mind-numbingly repetitive scenes in which the characters talk about the same things over and over and laugh uproariously at things that aren't funny, express flagrantly phony emotions and engage in sex scenes that look ugly and unpleasant."

The review in the Boston Herald questions the element of comedy in the movie.

Others seem to differ.

Peter Labuza of Variety applauded the comedic dialogue by saying, "Much more entertaining is the on-again-off-again banter between Hart and Hall, constantly gnawing at each other to delightful effect; Hart extends his brand of wide-eyed facial movements and uncontrollable volume levels, well paired with Hall's viciously snappy gestures and punchy tone."

Labuza delivers a completely opposite review with, "Their characters' relationship if rife with nasty paybacks, kooky sex, and eventually a witty retort that brings the film closer to Mamet's original takeaway."

Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News stated that this is the movie that "clicks" with men as much as it does with women.

Despite the mixed reviews for the rom-com, it seems to be receiving better reviews than his 2013 stand up "Let Me Explain."

"Let Me Explain" had gotten only a 63% rating while "About Last Night" received a higher 74%.

The stand up show had only received a 53% rating on metacritic and a 6.5 on imdb.

Will the comedy become the next hit for comedian Kevin Hart? We'll have to wait and see this weekend.
