Hollywood darling Ellen Page, known for her strong girl role in "X-men: Days of the Future Past" and "Juno", publicly announced that she is gay in the Thrive conference in Las Vegas.
Time to THRIVE is a conference organized by Human Rights Campaign (HRC) dedicated to helping out the LGBT youth. Its inauguration happened last Valentine's day where Page, 26, was one of the guest speaker.
In a personal and moving speech, Ellen Page opened up about her being "gay":
"I'm here today because I am gay," she told the audience, "and because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility."
The voice of "Jodie Holmes in Beyond: Two Souls elaborated on the turmoil she have experienced ever since she became popular.
"It's weird because here I am, an actress, representing -- at least in some sense -- an industry that places crushing standards on all of us," Page was quoted saying during the conference. "Not just young people, but everyone. Standards of beauty. Of a good life. Of success. Standards that, I hate to admit, have affected me."
"You have ideas planted in your head, thoughts you never had before, that tell you how you have to act, how you have to dress and who you have to be. I have been trying to push back, to be authentic, to follow my heart, but it can be hard," she painfully shared.
She then went on to enumerate people who inspired her to be courageous and come out, which included indie musicians Tegan and Sara, football player Michael Sam, and "Orange Is The New Black" actress, Laverne Cox.
"We deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise," Juno actress, Ellen Page emphasized.
The Canadian Star received a standing ovation from the Las Vegas crowd.
Human Rights Campaign tweeted a congratulatory message to "Whip It!" star for admitting her being "gay":
"Congratulations, @EllenPage for taking the steps to live openly and come out as lesbian. #comingout"
