Details of the Fort Hood shooting are being revealed as families and friends desperately try to understand what happened.

NBC News reports that the soldier, Ivan Lopez, shot three people to death at Fort Hood and wounded 16 more before taking his own life.

The shooter used a .45 caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistol that he had recently purchased.

The Iraq war veteran was under treatment for depression and anxiety and being evaluated for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Ivan Lopez reportedly did not see combat during a tour in Iraq three years ago. Officials have stated that although there are no records of combat citations or ribbons, it does not mean Lopez was not suffering serious psychological problems.

The 34-year-old husband and father served eight years in the Army National Guard in Puerto Rico before enlisting in the Army in June 2008.

He was assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas, before transferring to Fort Hood two months ago, according to military records.

The commanding officer of Fort Hood, Lt. Gen Mark Milley stated that Ivan Lopez "self-reported" a brain injury.

Ivan Lopez had reportedly lost his mother in November and his grandfather just a month before in October.

The shooter's wife is struggling to understand what happened. It was reported that Lopez's wife became hysterical when his name surface in television reports as the gunman.

Family members came to the apartment she shared with her husband and their 3-year-old daughter and escorted her to an unknown location.

According to a neighbor of the family, Xanderia Morris, stated that the Lopez family was "typical" and "average," which makes the shooting even more shocking.

The biggest question right now is what Lopez's motive could have been for the shooting.

Milley stated to CNN News, "There's no indication that this incident is related to terrorism, although we are not ruling anything out and the investigation continues."

He continued, "There are initial reports there may have been an argument in one of the unit areas, but no indication of an argument at the WTU."

It is unclear whether Lopez knew his victims or not.
