Barbara Walters is retiring after her long, long career in television.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the TV journalist announced on Monday that she will be making her last scheduled appearance on "The View" on May 16.

The co-host of "The View" began her television career back in 1961 as a reporter on "Today" and moved to ABC in 1976, where she became the first female co-anchor of a news program.

She has since made a name for herself as a popular interviewer and journalist.

ABC will reportedly honor Walters' five decades of broadcasting with a week-long celebration.

The network also plans to air a two-hour prime-time special looking back at Walters' career on May 16.

It has been reported that ABC will name its News Headquarters in New York City in her honor.

The 84-year-old journalist helped create the daytime talk show with Bill Geddie in August 1997.

Walters had reportedly announced last May that she would be leaving "The View" in 2014, but hadn't set an exact date.

During the course of her career, Barbara Walters has clearly made an impact on television and journalism.

Robert A. Iger, chairman and chief executive of The Walt Disney Company told E! News, "In this business, there are legends, there are icons, and then there is Barbara Walters."

Iger continued, "She's a dear friend and colleague as well as someone I deeply admire, and it's impossible to fully convey her impact and influence on television. She broke barriers, defied convention, made history and set the standard for journalistic excellence for more than 50 years."

He concluded, "It's hard to imagine television without her."

Walters made sure to notify the public that she won't be disappearing completely from television.

The renowned reporter said, "Many of you have put up with me since your childhood and you're not free of me yet because I'm not leaving television entirely."

The now retiring Walters continued, "I will continue as my role of executive producer of 'The View' so I can keep my eye on all of you. And it also means that I can continue to watch Bill Geddie, who's worked for me for over 25 years, get older and older... as I get blonder ... I am the coziest and I have the best time here at this program that I created 17 years ago."

Even before Barbara Walters spoke of retiring, there had been rumors of co-host Jenny McCarthy "taking over" the show.

Although we don't know if this is true, we're going to have to see how dynamics change on "The View."
