"Dom Hemingway" is a new comedy directed by Richard Shepard. Both the trailer and cast have been getting quite a bit of buzz.
The film, which stars Jude Law, has been receiving rather mediocre reviews, unfortunately.
Richard Roeper of the Sun Times wrote that Jude Law's character, Dom Hemingway, doesn't really go past being the "miserable, psychotic, alcoholic S.O.B" that he appears to be.
Roeper writes, "After the first 'I'm Dom Hemingway!' outburst, the subsequent bouts of madness lose their intensity and intrigue. We're just watching Jude law, who gained some 30 pounds for this role, acting his rear end off but also spinning his wheels in a story that never amounts to more than a collection of vignettes about Dom's life after prison."
Although the movie itself is intense without much story, Jude Law has proven himself as an actor through this film.
SF Gate wrote that "Dom Hemingway" is more about Jude Law as a force of nature, which practically makes the film, rather than the protagonist that he plays.
The trailer, which portrays Jude Law simply as an aggressive drunk may have been quite misleading after all.
For those that don't know, "Dom Hemingway" begins with a safe-cracker naked in a prison shower delivering a soliloquy. Dom has been in prison for 12 years because he refused to testify against his crime boss Mr. Fontaine (Demian Bichir).
According to The Boston Herald, Dom's girlfriend dies of cancer during that time and he loses touch with his daughter, played by Emilia Clarke.
Once Dom gets out of prison, he heads to the South of France to see Fontaine after having tons of sex and displaying spurts of violence here and there.
Instead of taking the money that is offered to him, Dom chooses to let his resentment for Fontaine and his attraction to the gangster's girlfriend get the better of him.
Jude Law plays a role that is different from any he's ever played in "Dom Hemingway." It may be worth a watch.
