A Bowe Bergdhal movie is in the works from "Hurt Locker" Oscar Winning Director Kathryn Bigelow as two studios fight it out to bring POW's story to the screen.

According to Variety, the Bowe Bergdhal movie will be produced by Mark Boal's Page 1 production company, which is being financially supported by Annapurna Pictures.

The army sergeant was detained for five years by the Taliban until he was freed on May 31 in exchange for five prisoners of the terrorist organization being held at the Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. He was recovered in eastern Afghanistan where the exchange took place.

The prisoner exchange was a point of controversy since the Obama administration did not inform Congress about the deal, breaking protocol.

He arrived in the medical facility of the army in San Antonio, Texas on June 13 to assess his health condition. However, Bowe Bergdhal is not totally in the clear yet since his detention has become a subject of an army investigation, led by a two-star general, to determine culpability.

"These types of investigations are not uncommon and serve to establish the facts on the ground following an incident," the army revealed in a statement. The army, however, has not filed any formal charges against the prisoner of war.

Meanwhile, Deadline broke the news that there are two studios fighting it out for the Bowe Bergdhal movie as Fox Searchlight has acquired the rights to "America's Last Prisoner of War," which was a Rolling Stone exclusive by Michael Hastings.

"Hastings was a hard-charging journo whose profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal - who ran the war in Afghanistan and who was depicted in the article as openly mocking the White House- was brought home and resigned," Mike Fleming Jr. wrote.

The website revealed that Todd Field ("The Bedroom") might helm the movie.
