‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Author Earns More Than ‘Harry Potter’ Writer JK Rowling; EL James Cashes On Erotic Fiction
"Fifty Shades of Grey" author earned nearly four times more than what "Harry Potter" writer JK Rowling made last year, as E.L. James cashes in on erotic fiction.
According to MailOnline, the financial accounts filed by "Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James revealed that she earned £33 million ($56.19 million) last year or more than £90,000 ($153,256) daily from the proceeds of the sales of the trilogy.
Meanwhile, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling earned £8.6 million ($14.6 million) in 2013.
"Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James reportedly earned a "modest salary" of £7,800 ($13,252) but earned dividend worth £3.24million ($5.5 million).
The trilogy reportedly sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. It's now being adapted into a film with Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson and directed by Sam Taylor-Wood.
Her company, Fifty Shades Limited, earned $33.4 million and profits made after tax reached £25.5million ($43.4 million).
"Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James lives with her husband Niall in a six-bedroom home in west London and the couple is reportedly leading a modest lifestyle.
Per the London online news site, her husband Niall said: "Commentators can conjure ridiculous royalty figures out of the air and imply that our afternoons are spent in an infinity pool with trained dolphins bringing us goblets of chilled Bolly, but in real life the dog has to be walked and the children have to be fed and ferried around."
Dr. Charlotte Jones, chairperson of the British Medical Association's General Practitioners Committee coined the term "Fifty Shades of Grey" effect to explain the rising cases of STI.
"When it comes to forgetting about safe sex we always think of the vulnerability of young people, but there's the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' effect where older people are being more explorative, but not necessarily remembering to use a condom," she said, in a report by the New York Daily Post.
