K-Drama Disc Jockeys

In the last year several highly desirable k-drama characters have been at least part-time disc jockeys.

Sung Joon played Joo Won a.k.a. Allen Joo, a 20-something celebrity disc jockey and songwriter in "I Need Romance 3." His character is a global star, playing at nightclubs and producing records in the U.S. He is a highly sought after disc jockey when he returns to Korea.

Of course the heroine, played by Kim So Yeon, falls for his musical skills before she realizes that they were children together and they already know each other.

And now Choi Jin Hyuk is in a drama that also affords him a turn as a DJ. He plays Daniel an industrial designer superstar, who just happens to be an ace disc jockey on the side. When he spins records in "Fated To Love You," he dresses the part, wearing a superstar gold leather jacket that gilds his undeniable charms. Mastering the synthesizer is just one of his character's talents. Rescuing poor downtrodden Jang Nara and annoying his rival Jang Hyuk are two other skills he excels in.

And Jo In Sung also gets a chance to spin records in "It's Okay It's Love." His character Jang Jae Yeol plays sets between writing his mystery bestsellers, being a radio disc jockey and tormenting his unwilling roommate Gong Hyo Jin. Jang Jae Yeol is very fond of music and is often seen with headphones on. He dances around even if there is no music playing. It's perhaps the first thing that Gong Hyo Jin's character finds charming about him. As the plot develops it becomes obvious that the character is often listening to music that only plays in his head, but that's another story.

Are the disc jockeys that play in the Gangnam area nightclubs as glamorous as their k-drama counterparts? Some definitely are and a few have a global reputation. Personable Korean disc jockey/musicians such as Flash Finger perform in foreign countries and collaborate with musicians around the world.

And some actors do occasionally take a turn as glamorous guest disc jockeys either in clubs or on the radio. For example, Chae Tae Hyun, last seen in "Jeon Woo Chi" and "My Husband Got A Family," enjoys playing disc jockey. Singer and actor Kim Heechul, who can currently be seen in "Flower Grandpas Investigation Unit," has been a DJ. So has Choi Kang Hee, who appeared in "Level 7 Civil Servant," and Girls Generation singer-turned actress Sooyoung.
