In an interview, the writer, Linda Woolverton, "Maleficent" full movie was "a reinvention, not just a retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty fairytale." Director Robert Stromberg told EW, "There are two sides to every story. This is about examining the other side. And once you 've become dark, how much hard it is to see the light again."

"Maleficent" cast a spell in the box office as it gained ticket sales of $69,431,298 in the opening weekend. Total domestic gross was $240,978,399; total worldwide gross was $750,978,399. This negated earlier feedback that this Disney film may discourage family audiences as it is "retelling Sleeping Beauty from the villain's perspective".  

Its success is mostly due to its star, Angelina Jolie. This is the Oscar's award winning actress's first movie in four years but she stayed in the spotlight. Isn't it just last year when she revealed her decision to go through preventive double mastectomy?

In an interview with HitFix, she disclosed her reason for accepting or believing in the project. "Well, I wanted to do something that my children could see. I wanted to have fun and explore different art and performance in a way I hadn't done. Most of all I read Linda [Woolverton]'s script and I was really moved by it. I got really emotional by the time I finished it. I thought it was one of the best scripts I'd read in a long time because of the issues it dealt with. I thought it was, in fact, an important story to tell."
