'Sherlock' star Benedict Cumberbatch is engaged to Sophie Hunter!

To the shock and heartbreak of millions of Cumberbatch fans around the world, the 38-year-old actor announced his engagement with actress and director Sophie Hunter in an unusual way.

Ever the witty guy, 'The Imitation Game' star published a very small ad in The Times newspaper on Wednesday. The tiny post was spotted by eagle-eyed journalists and promptly reported to the whole world.

"Mr BT. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London," the ad simply read.

The media had previously speculated that Benedict Cumberbatch would be engaged to Sophie Hunter soon, after the pair visited the latter's mother in Edinburgh last month. Cumberbatch allegedly set time aside from his very busy schedule to personally ask his girlfriend's hand from Katherine Hunter.

According to The Mirror, Hunter's family are "delighted" with the news.

"We are very happy for them. It's a really fabulous day. It's only just been announced so we don't know any more but it's lovely news," Katherine Hunter, Sophie's mother, said.

 "We're all very happy for Soph - it's really exciting," the Oxford graduate's younger brother, Patrick, said.

The couple reportedly first met in 2009 on the set of 'Burlesque Fairytales,' but reportedly only started dating this year. They made their first public appearance when they attended the French Open in July. They have also attended a friend's wedding together in September.

The announcement was met with a mixed wave of despair and congratulations on the Internet. Fans flocked to Twitter to express their sadness at seeing yet another Hollywood bachelor slip out of their hands.

Earlier this year, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie finally settled down in a private ceremony in France with their children and some 20 guests in attendance.
