They’re actors and idols. Only unlike many other k-celebs with dual music and acting careers, the members of 5urprise started out acting and only recently released a single. By the time their first single was released, audiences had already fallen for the charms of the group’s members thanks to their roles in recent dramas.
The members of the group are Seo Kang Joon, Gong Myung, Yoo Il, Lee Tae Hwan and Kang Tae Oh.
The members of the group appeared together in a 12-episode mobile drama titled “After School: Lucky or Not, which could be seen on smartphones and tablets. They played the five members of a high school club who interact with a character played by actress Kim So Eun. The group did release a song for the drama’s soundtrack titled “Hey You Come On.” But then the focus shifted back to acting.
Two of the group’s members have already seen some success as actors.
Seo Kang Joon has made a name for himself in dramas such as “Good Doctor,” “The Suspicious Housekeeper,” “Cunning Single Lady” and “What’s With This Family.
Lee Tae Hwan played Seo In Guk’s high school buddy in “The King of High School Manners” and now appears as a criminal investigator in the drama “Pride and Prejudice.”
Seo and Lee won those roles before the group released its first album, “From My Heart.” The album features vocal and instrumental versions of the song “From My Heart” as well as vocal and instrumental versions of the song “Jump.”
Cho Young Soo, who composed the music for Orange Caramel’s “Magic Girl,” wrote the music for “From My Heart.” The song’s lyrics were written by Kim Yi Na, who wrote lyrics for IU’s “The Red Shoes” and the Brown Eyed Girls song “Abacadabra.”
The music video features sweet vocals and charismatic performances by the five group members, as well as an appearance by young actress Kim Sae Ron.
According to a representative from the group’s agency Fantagio, nowadays it is important for actors to promote themselves in various ways. As well as acting, they might contribute to drama soundtracks, release albums and hold concerts. The group plans to focus on acting in Korea but target overseas markets with their music releases.
On Nov. 18 the group attended a showcase for their single at the CGV Cine City in Gangnam. The group plans to tour six countries including Japan, China and Thailand.
