One Direction Zayn Malik didn't appear on the US TV show "The Today Show" which is hosted by Matt Lauer.

Matt Lauer gave a hint on Twitter that One Direction Zayn Malik will not join the One Direction interview.

"The Today Show" host asked the boyband, "Let's start with the obvious. Where's Zayn?"

Liam Payne answered that their bandmate had a "tummy bug" and he further explained, "We only found out this morning so we're really sad, he is as well, that he can't be here for our album release... It's still going to be a great day, I'm sure."

But the host tried to fire up the discussion by questioning, "Liam, there's obviously a lot of concern, a lot of fans have been tweeting overnight, there's been a lot of action on social media about him. Is it something more serious than just a minor illness? There have been rumors of substance abuse. What's going on?"

Payne answered, "No, he's just got a stomach bug. He's okay. He's just at home. He just needs to rest. He's okay."

The last question of the TV host made 1D fans to "boo" Lauer loudly. The One Direction interview was held at the Universal Resort in Orlando, Florida. The 4 members arrived by boat.

According to Independent UK, Malik told The Sun: "I'm really angry and upset by what was said on The Today Show. I was really ill at the weekend, that's why I couldn't fly to America."
