SHINee′s Onew is considering the role of a doctor who works with Song Hye Kyo's character in the upcoming drama "Descendants of the Sun."
"Onew is positively looking into appearing in KBS′s new drama, Descendants of the Sun," his agency SM Entertainment told Newsen on April 13.
If he does take the role he will play one of the younger doctors that works with the international medical charity, Doctors Without Borders. Such doctors volunteer to travel wherever they are needed even if they are needed in dangerous conflict zones. They risk their lives to heal others.
Song Hye Kyo plays Dr. Kang Mo Yeon, a doctor who is not afraid to risk her life. The drama will also star Song Joong Ki as Yoo Si Jin, the head of a United Nations Peacekeeping security force. The characters played by Song Hye Kyo and Slong Joong Ki will initially clash. But they will overcome their differences. They fall in love, despite, and perhaps because of, the deadly circumstances they have to operate in. Also cast in the drama are actor Jin Goo and actress Kim Ji Won. Jin Goo, who appeared in the film "The Battle for Yeonpyeong" and the drama "Ad Genius Lee Tae Baek" will play Officer Seo Dae Yeong. Kim Ji Won, who appeared in the dramas "The Heirs" and "Gap Dong," will play another surgeon.
It is not yet known what part Onew's character will play in the melodrama. He could be the third wheel in a love triangle. The singer-turned-actor has some previous drama experience having played cameo parts in "Athena: Goddess of War" and "Oh My God x 2" and small roles in "Pure Love" and "Welcome to "Royal Villa." It could also be his second time playing a doctor as he played a cameo as a doctor in "Doctor Champ."
Onew has starred in various musicals, including "Brothers were Brave" and he had a lead role in the Korean production of "Rock of Ages."
Most of "Descendants of the Sun" will be filmed in foreign locations and the drama will be mostly produced before it begins airing in the latter half of 2015.
Kim Eun Suk, who wrote "The Heirs," "Secret Garden" and "Lovers in Paris, will write "Descendants of the Sun" with Kim Won Suk. Lee Eung Bok, who directed "Secrets" and "Discovery of Romance," will direct the drama.
