Is "Bates Motel" season 4 cancelled? The season 3 finale, titled "Unconscious," might have ended with a cliffhanger leaving the audience wanting more but rumor has it that the A&E series might just have been axed.

As reported by Fashion & Style, there's a possibility that "Bates Motel" could be cancelled given its less than stellar ratings. It was said that the average ratings dropped drastically during season 3, with the series not even reaching 2 million viewers.

"Bates Motel" however has a strong social media presence which could encourage the A&E producers to give season 4 another shot.

Series executive producer Carlton Cuse was quoted in saying that the series was not one to last a very long time. In an interview with Variety,  Cuse compared "Bates Motel" to "Grey's Anatomy."

"[Bates Motel] is a story that has a beginning, middle and end, and we want to write to the end of it. It's not like a 'Grey's Anatomy' which is sort of open-ended - there's always another doctor or patient that's gonna walk into the hospital," he said.

"This is not a show that should run for 10 years. We feel like this year, we'll have a pretty good sense of when it's gonna end ... a couple more seasons after that, perhaps? I would hope that we could work that out with Universal and A&E and tell the audience exactly how much longer is left."

Although A&E has yet to make an official announcement on whether "Bates Motel" will be renewed or cancelled, the show producers remain optimistic. Speaking to Calgary Herald, Cuse revealed what they have in store for season 4 if it gets the green light.

"The promise of Season 4 is Norman unleashed," he said.

"Season 3, the journey was about Norman becoming aware of his pathology, in that he is capable of blacking out and that he does some less desirable things when he blacks out. That's where we start the season. By the end of the season, Norman is moving from one persona to the other without any real cognition of that. And that is the scary evolution. Now that this character is freely jumping in and out of personas, that's going to be really compelling. The question is, what can Norma do to save her son as he descends further into his disease. That's really the question of Season 4."
