Cain Velasquez Wants To Return To The Octagon After Brutal Submission Loss To Fabricio Werdum; The Former Heavyweight Champ Emerged Unharmed From The Bout!
Despite losing the heavyweight title to Fabricio Werdum, it looks like former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is all set to return to the Octagon.
After his third round submission loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 188 pay-per-view in Mexico City on June 13, the status of Cain Velasquez was not known.
On Wednesday, July 8, UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani revealed the news that the former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez did not suffer any serious injuries from the bout and wants to get back in the cage sooner than later.
"The good news is, no major injuries. He's healthy, he's ready to go, he wants to get back in there., and sources have told me that Cain Velasquez wants to fight October 3, UFC 192 in Houston, Texas, which by the way that you (speaking to co-host, Velasquez' teammate, and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier) want to fight on."
This is without doubt excellent news to hear that Velasquez was able to emerge from his bout with Werdum unharmed. Now that the heavyweight division is free of the hold Velasquez put on it while on the sidelines for 20 months, Cormier noted that the former champ is looking at a particular match-up as far as his perceived return in Houston is concerned, Lock Kick MMA noted.
After a long time an excruciating knee injury pushed back his upcoming fight with Alexander Gustafsson to sometime in the fall, 'DC' too us eying a return of his own at that exact event. Cormier noted that he and his good friend could actually sell out the event if they were booked side by side.
"There are two people that are in the running for a title shot - Arlovski or Miocic. Whichever one doesn't get a title shot, Cain wants to beat them, reclaim his heavyweight championship by the beginning of next year. Put Cain in Houston; we will sell that place out, me and Velasquez."
Interestingly, the UFC 192 card in Houston is slated to take place relatively close to Cormier's home state of Louisiana, and would definitely make regional fight fans happy who were unable to see DC live when he pulled out of a New Orleans bout with Ryan Bader to fill in for Jon Jones and fight Anthony Johnson for the vacated 205-pound title, according to records on FOX Sports.
Cormier and Velasquez have fought on the same card from Houston on Oct. 2013's UFC 166. The difference however is that Velasquez had the belt then and he held onto with a dominant performance in a brutal fifth round stoppage of Junior dos Santos.
Now he is chasing the title shot again and his fans would be hoping that he earns a chance to fight for the belt by defeating Arlovski or Miocic in Houston.
