Gong Yoo, Bae Doona, & Lee Joon Give a Sneak Peek of Their New Series ‘The Silent Sea’ + Talk about How They Enjoyed Filming

Cast of the upcoming sci-fi series "The Silent Sea" Gong Yoo, Bae Doona, and Lee Joon shared their thoughts about the project.

In a recent event of Netflix "See What's Next Korea 2021" held on the 25th of February, some of the cast and production team of the upcoming movie and drama projects attended the special occasion to talk about their own projects.

The forthcoming sci-fi horror thriller series "The Silent Sea" is expected to be set in the future, the time where desertification has left the earth with insufficient food and water. Meanwhile, a special group of individuals is in charge with recovering mysterious samples from a deserted research site on the moon.

The New Space Trio Bae Doona, Gong Yoo, and Lee Joon

The character of Dr. Song Ji Ahn will be portrayed by "Kingdom" actress Bae Doona, an astrobiologist who will join forces with a team working to uncover the secret behind an accident that happened at the research site. "Goblin" star Gong Yoo is Han Yoon Jae, a smart team leader who takes on an important mission of retrieving the specimens from the abandoned research site. Singer and actor Lee Joon will play as a talented engineer named Ryu Tae Seok.

It was also revealed that "The Silent Sea" is an extension of the previous short film of the same name that Choi Hang Yong directed. Writer Park Eun Gyo, who worked on the film "Mother" penned the script of the upcoming sci-fi series, and actor Jung Woo Sung is said to be the one producing the project.

Due to conflict of schedules, actor Gong Yoo and director Choi Hang Yong weren't able to attend the event. Meanwhile, actors Jung Woo Sung, Bae Doona, Lee Joon, and writer Park were present during the gatherings.

Producer and actor Jung Woo Sung started by sharing that the time he saw the short film way back seven years ago. He loved the concept and wanted to make a longer version of it "I began to take on the challenge without doubt and ended up producing the project after meeting with these amazing cast and team."

The Story Behind How "The Silent Sea" Turn into a Series

Meanwhile, writer Park said "We had a long preparation for this (project). We even think of it as a feature-length film at first." She continued by sharing that "The said project's universe and concept have good flexibility, and when Netflix proposed that it be made into a series, that's the time I realized that we would be able to fully tell the story of it."

Actress Bae Doona confessed that she also saw the movie before and was captivated by the story and it made her decide to join the cast, she even added that the series has its hidden cards. Bae Doona further explained what she meant of 'hidden cards' according to her "Some projects may have a story concept about teams who leave for space because of a mission , but 'The Silent Sea' has something more to offer and can go beyond that."

Meanwhile, Lee Joon expressed "I was interested in space before. I did lots of studying and research, and when this kind of project came, I thought it was captivating and fascinating." he went on "Things that's even more interesting is the concept, it looks very realistic, and so I am very happy and honored to be part of this team."

Bae Doona also shared that the costumes of space suits are really heavy that made her panic while shooting. But the actors helped each other, she even praised the kind of comradeship that the cast shared during the filming. The cast revealed that they used to be awkward with each other at first but since they have been working most of the time together, they become more used to each other and build a great bond.

Writer Park hoped that the series could meet everyone's expectations. And before the talk ends, Lee Joon said "The Silent Sea' team is having lots of fun while filming, and I am looking forward to the project to be as much fun as the atmosphere on the set is great."
