"Squid Game" actor Oh Young Soo made history by becoming the first-ever Korean to bag a Best Supporting Actor trophy at the Golden Globes Awards.

Due to the surging cases of COVID-19, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has decided to hold the 79th Golden Globes Awards "privately" at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 10 without any red carpet, live stream, or cable broadcast.

For this year's annual ceremony, the HFPA announced the winners, honoring the best of the best in film and television.

With the worldwide popularity of K-contents, another veteran actor becomes South Korea's pride after bagging one of the categories at the Golden Globes.

For this year's ceremony, Oh Young Soo took home Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for his impressive portrayal of player number 001 Oh Il Nam in Netflix's "Squid Game."

The 77-year-old star defeated some of the big names in Hollywood, including Mark Duplass and Billy Crudup from "The Morning Show," Keiran Culkin from "Succession," and Brett Goldstein from "Ted Lasso."

To recall, "Squid Game" earned three nods at the 79th Golden Globes Awards; unfortunately, lead star Lee Jung Jae, who played player number 456 Seong Gi Hoon in the survival game themed Kdrama failed to score the Best Actor category.

The South Korean star lost to "Succession" actor Jeremy Strong who took home the award for the said category.

Interestingly, before the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that the ceremony would be held privately due to the growing cases of COVID-19, Lee Jung Jae's agency, Artist Company, announced that the actor won't be attending the Golden Globes 2022.

The same goes for the whole team of "Squid Game," including director Hwang Dong Hyuk and fellow nominee Oh Young Soo.

The 77-year-old star debuted as a theater actor and appeared in numerous KDramas and movies since he started his career, but it was the Netflix series that made him well known even outside South Korea.

To reach his fans globally, Oh Young Soo launched his Instagram in October 2021, right after Lee Jung Jae and Park Hae Soo made their own official IG account.

Moreover, the veteran actor also graced numerous shows, including MBC's "How Do You Play?" with hosts Yoo Jae Suk and Lovelyz's Mijoo.

At the time, Oh Young Soo detailed his experience filming "Squid Game" and the changes that he went through after the Netflix series became a huge hit.

During the interview, he revealed that he turned down numerous commercial offers, including a renowned fried chicken brand.

He admitted that he feels overwhelmed with the popularity that he is experiencing and it's hard for him to take the volume of calls, especially since he doesn't have a manager to help him.

As the interview gets deeper, the veteran actor spoke about his grand ambitions and confessed that he doesn't have one.

Oh Young Soo explained that he sees everything as achievement, even if it's big or small.

"To put it simply, let's say you go to a mountain and see a flower. When we're young, we pick the flower and take it for ourselves. But by the time you reach my age, you leave it there exactly as it is, and you go back to see it again later on. It's the same with life. Leaving things exactly the way they are. It isn't easy," he said.
