‘Squid Game’ Season 2: Was Netflix Uncertain to Cast Choi Seung Hyun in Upcoming Sequel?

After announcing the cast lineup, "Squid Game" season 2 continued to receive mixed reactions from the viewers, especially with Choi Seung Hyun coming on board for the sequel.

Besides the alleged connection with global superstar Lee Jung Jae, the K-pop star had a rocky process of joining the series.

Choi Seung Hyun's Appearance in 'Squid Game' Season 2 Is Not Official Despite Attending Script Reading

As obtained by a media outlet, Star News' exclusive report claimed that Choi Seung Hyun was not officially confirmed for "Squid Game" season 2 when he attended the first script reading.

Usually, before the table read, cast members are confirmed that they will be among the official cast members of an upcoming show.

However, as for the former BIGBANG member, he did not hear a confirmation from the streaming giant until the day of the script reading.

According to the outlet, Netflix, being a global company, "felt uncomfortable casting Choi Seung Hyun" due to his past controversies.

To recall, he got involved in drug issues back in June 2017, when he was accused of using marijuana.

At the time, the report stated that he was "actively" consuming cannabis and was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 2 years probation due to this.

Because of the backlash and the negativity, the K-Pop star expressed his intention to retire from the industry.

As for his appearance in "Squid Game" season 2, Netflix reportedly had another photo taken just in case the casting lineup with Choi Seung Hyun fails.

Thankfully, a teaser including the K-Pop star pushed through with the streaming giant and "Squid Game" season 2 director and creator Hwang Dong Hyuk, confirming his casting.

Meet the 'Squid Game' Season 2 Cast

To recall, the first batch of cast members confirmed to join "Squid Game" season 2 are Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hoon, Wi Ha Joon, and Gong Yoo, who all appeared in the first season.

Im Siwan, Kang Ha Neul, Park Sung Hoon, and Yang Dong Geun will also be joining the upcoming installment.

Meanwhile, a teaser featuring a photo group of additional "Squid Game" season 2 cast members was introduced on June 29.

Joining Choi Seung Hyun are Won Ji An, Noh Jae Won, Jo Yu Ri, David Lee, Kang Ae Shim, and "Sweet Home" stars Park Gyu Young and Lee Jin Wook.

On the other hand, Netflix is currently filming the second season, with a target release date of 2024.
