Chinese actress Zhao Wei has filed a lawsuit against individuals spreading false claims linking her to a human trafficking ring in Myanmar, her family confirmed Sunday, calling the rumors "malicious" and emotionally damaging.

The 49-year-old star, long known as one of China's most prominent actresses, has remained largely silent in recent years amid speculation of blacklisting and past scandals. Now, she is fighting back.
"Zhao Wei officially initiated legal proceedings against those responsible for fabricating and disseminating false information online," her brother, Zhao Jian, said in a social media post.
He condemned the online harassment, revealing that years of defamatory attacks had caused Zhao Wei significant emotional trauma.
The rumors — that Zhao Wei had masterminded a human trafficking operation in Southeast Asia — raced across Chinese social media platforms earlier this month, spread along by edited images and personal attacks.
Police investigations revealed that the originator of the false allegations was a lawyer, who allegedly admitted to creating and circulating the story to attract business traffic. Authorities have not released the individual's full identity.
"The extent of the damage these fabrications caused our family is unimaginable," Zhao Jian added.
Public sentiment appears to support Zhao Wei's legal action. Many online commenters expressed frustration that the actress had not pursued legal avenues sooner.
"She should've done this long ago," one post read. Another wrote, "Zhao Wei deserves protection like anyone else."
This marks Zhao Wei's first official lawsuit in over two decades.
The actress, who finalized her divorce from businessman Huang Youlong in December 2024, has urged the public to stop associating her name with unfounded scandals.
"She's choosing to protect her dignity now," Zhao Jian said.
Representatives for Zhao Wei did not respond to requests for comment.
The actress, known internationally for roles in films such as "Shaolin Soccer" and "Red Cliff," has largely withdrawn from the public eye since 2021, fueling speculation about her career status.
