Story J Company released a statement explaining the decision in a phone call with Dispatch on September 12.

"Kang Mina has decided not to participate in the 'I.O.I' 10th anniversary reunion project," a representative said.

The agency justified the decision, citing scheduling conflicts between the reunion schedule and Mina's ongoing professional acting career.

"We were concerned that the period during which we were discussing reunion activities would overlap with the filming of our drama and the promotion of other projects," they added.

Mina and her team made a final decision to forego the reunion after careful consideration.

"We have decided to respect the artist's wish to focus on acting," the agency further stated.

I.O.I was an 11-member female group created via Mnet's reality show Produce 101 in 2016.

Despite being active for only around a year, the group had several hit songs like Dreamgirls and Very, Very, Very and created a lasting imprint in K-pop.

The 10th debut anniversary of the group is on May 4, 2026. Reports of a reunion have apparently been ongoing, and members Jeon So-mi and Jung Chae-yeon earlier showed public interest in reuniting.

While Kang Mina is missed by her fans, she is busy establishing herself further on television and the big screen.

She most recently appeared in KBS2TV's Twelve and the Netflix original film Confession History. She will also be featured in the new Netflix series Girigo, which debuts next year.

While reunion negotiations proceed, it is uncertain which members will eventually join. For the time being, Kang Mina has opted to focus on her increasing status as a performer in other fields rather than returning to the stage with her old group.

In other news, Kang Mina is reportedly preparing to leave her longtime agency, Jellyfish Entertainment, and is in discussions to sign with Story J Company, the management agency that represents her Cafe Minamdang co-star Seo In Guk.

According to a media report released on June 15, 2023, the actress is considering a move that would potentially make her labelmates with Seo, raising anticipation among fans who enjoyed their on-screen chemistry.

While the transition has not been officially confirmed, industry insiders suggest that negotiations are ongoing.

This possible agency switch comes as Kang Mina continues to expand her acting career, including her reported involvement in the upcoming drama Welcome to Samdalri.

The series is written by Kwon Hye Joo (Go Back Couple, Hi, Bye Mama) and directed by Cha Young Hoon (When the Camellia Blooms), further marking her growth in the entertainment industry.
