About a year ago, South Korea was rumored to be already making its move as it develops 5G network. During that same period, the whole world was still adjusting its infrastructure to offer 4G connectivity.

5G (5th generation mobile networks or 5th generation wireless systems) denotes the next major phase of mobile telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G/IMT-Advanced standards. 5G is also referred to as beyond 2020 mobile communications technologies. 5G does not describe any particular specification in any official document published by any telecommunication standardization body.

Although updated standards that define capabilities beyond those defined in the current 4G standards are under consideration, those new capabilities are still being grouped under the current ITU-T 4G standards.

Now, the nation has just got a major boost as EU is now working hand in hand to develop new technologies, set standards and allocates radio frequencies for next-gen mobile information and communication works.

The partnership between the two will guarantee that the 5G network will be even for the whole world. In spite of the team building going on, the dateline for 5G network don't look like changing at all. South Korea sticks to 2020, as the ideal date of arrival for 5G.

As for the EU, they can't hide their eagerness to be part of the team that will give the world 5G connectivity. EU was on the driving seat of GSM's development and now, it returns for 5G.

Obviously, development will accelerate from here on. With the Apple iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 coming later this year, manufacturers might want to prepare them for the 5G era. Both the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy Note 4 are expected to re-define speed.
