IU Can't Catch A Break

On May 29, the Korean outlet Star Today published a report which bore the title, "Is IU really that bad at acting."  In the article, the writer examined the complexity of the singer-songwriter's dramatic performance in "Producer." The series places the acting idol up against critically acclaimed actors Kim Soo Hyun, Gong Hyo and Cha Tae Hyun. While their roles require emotional range, IU portrays Cindy, an emotionally aloof K-pop idol and former child star. 

The article harshly examined her performance in the drama, beginning with the first episode. "In the first broadcast, IU did not meet fully meet expectations," said the unnamed writer. "While her personality seemed to reflect Cindy, her performance is somewhat forced."

This criticism follows recent statements provided by her agent, which were intended to clear up misunderstandings about similarities between IU and the on-screen ingenue, Cindy. There were several comments from netizens which supported the opinions of the writer, but the overall response to IU's portrayal of Cindy has been positive. "Producer" premiered to mixed reactions from viewers, but the subsequent episodes have drawn mass appeal.

"Producer" serves as the third major acting role for IU, following her portrayal of Kim Bo Tong in the 2013 romantic comedy, "Pretty Man." "Pretty Man" was met with poor ratings and drew criticism for the lack of chemistry between IU and Hallyu star Jang Geun Suk. However, the love line of  IU and Seung Chan (Kim Soo Hyun) is the primary reason to watch the "Producer." Nicknamed the Umbrella Couple, they reflect the awkwardness of first love.

While she convincingly portrays the love interest of Kim Soo Hyun, IU shines in family comedies. She flourished in the title role of the KBS weekend series, "You're the Best, Lee Soo Shin."
