Writer Kim Eun Sook Reveals Unexpected Reaction of Lee Byung Hun to ‘Cheesy’ Lines in ‘Mr Sunshine’
Renowed writer Kim Eun Sook recalled one of her many hit K-dramas and revealed the interesting story behind "Mr. Sunshine."
The hit series stars Lee Byung Hun, Kim Tae Ri, Yoo Yeon Seok, Kim Min Jung, and Byun Yo Han. Apart from the overwhelming response to the project, Lee Byung Hun took home the Best Actor Award for TV at the Baeksang Arts Awards for his role as Choi Eugine.
Interestingly, during her guest appearance on KBS Happy FM's "Song Jin Woo's Brave Radio" for the celebration of the show's 100th episode, the award-winning writer mentioned an interesting story with Lee Byung Hun during the filming of "Mr. Sunshine."

There's no doubt Kim Eun Sook is highly-regarded as a screenwriter. For years, she was able to create masterpieces that became hit series.
Among her famous works are "Lovers in Paris," "Secret Garden," "The Heirs," "Descendants of the Sun," "Goblin," "The King: Eternal Monarch," and "The Glory."
During the interview, she recalled how they started "Mr. Sunshine" as well as Lee Byung Hun's initial reaction upon reading it.
As obtained by a media outlet, Kim Eun Sook said that she had a talk with the veteran actor about his lines.
Describing Lee Byung Hun as a "very decent person," the renowned writer shared how the actor couldn't directly mention to Kim Eun Sook that the lines were too "cheesy."
So instead, he tried to convey it in a nice way, to the point that "he beat around the bush."
Kim Eun Sook then called him a "really great person" because he didn't want to offend the writer for her work.
"This is the way of speaking I usually use. The actors sometimes say it's cheesy, but they have to do it as they get paid," she explained.

Released in 2018, the award-winning writer said that she planned the story 16 years ago, but it didn't push through because of the setbacks.

"I tried to cast actors, but at that time, there was only the Japanese market. When I planned the story of the independence movement, everyone said 'crazy' and didn't invest," she said.
Lo and behold, "Mr. Sunshine" is one of the hit and most talked-about K-dramas upon its release, not to mention several nominations it got in different awarding ceremonies.

After 2 seasons of "The Glory," Kim Eun Sook is set to release yet another hit K-drama.
