Lee Dong Wook Plans of Retiring Due to Hate He Receives Online

On February 6, Lee Dong Wook joined the live broadcast of producer Na Young Seok on YouTube. During his appearance, the actor opened up about the deep slump he experienced in his career after he worked on the medical series "Life."

The actor confessed that he had a tough time when he worked on the said drama in which he played the main character and received hate from the viewers. 

"It was serious that I didn't leave my house for almost a month." 

It has been said that after the successful conclusion of tvN's hit series "Stranger" in 2017, its writer Lee Soo Yeon's next project "Life," was expected to be another hit. However, the viewership rating did not do well. 

Lee Dong Wook expressed that he was unhappy with his acting in the drama and the whole situation. He recalled, "The series was getting hate online, and the negativity seemed to be directed at me. I began to think I was to blame, and I felt bad about it."

Due to the negative impact of the hate he received, Lee Dong Wook shared for the first time in public that he was on the verge of retiring from acting.

"I was going to retire. I never said this on air, but I seriously considered retiring and moving to another country." He added that he shouldn't be acting anymore. The "My Girl" star said that doing exercise was his escape from the cruel reality, but he did not achieve the body that he wanted due to stress and ended up drinking after working out.

Gong Yoo Helps Lee Dong Wook Overcome His Slump

Fortunately, Lee Dong Wook was able to get out of the difficult situation in his career and life because of Gong Yoo. His former co-star helped him overcome his slump.

Lee Dong Wook shared, "Gong Yoo was the one who got me out of my house. He just called me one day and told me to step out and join him." He elaborated that he didn't want to talk to anyone at that time, but Gong Yoo visited him. 

"He didn't ask anything about my current problem and we just had casual conversations, and it got me thinking. 'This is the world I belong to.' I had been obsessed with how people on the internet perceived me. But there was a real world outside, and that was where I belonged." 

Since then, Lee Dong Wook began going out of his house and living a more meaningful life.
