Japanese actress Fuka Koshiba expressed admiration for Korean dramas. She revealed her hopes of replicating the emotional impact of the original Mary My Husband during a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday, ahead of the Japanese adaptation's premiere.

Speaking to reporters at the Ramada Seoul Sindorim Hotel, Koshiba opened up about the influence Korean cinema has had on her craft and how it shaped her approach to the role.

"I'm a big fan of Korean films and dramas," said Koshiba. "Many of my favorite movies are Korean. It was a great experience working with Korean directors and production staff. When I got the offer, I immediately said yes."

The upcoming drama, titled Watashi no Otto to Kekkon Shite (私の夫と結婚して), is not a direct remake of the hit 2024 Korean series Marry My Husband, but rather a reimagined adaptation of the original web novel, tailored for Japanese audiences.

The series is set to premiere at midnight on June 27 on Amazon Prime Video.

Koshiba revealed that despite the director's advice not to watch the Korean version before filming, she chose to do so.

"I watched it after my first meeting with the director, even though he advised against it," she said. "It was incredibly entertaining and full of suspense. My heart was racing the whole time."

One scene in particular left a lasting impression on the actress.

"There's a scene where the main character transforms and shows up at a school reunion — it completely grabs your attention," Koshiba recalled.

"I took note of that scene so I could create similar standout moments in the Japanese version. At the same time, I focused on expressing emotional nuances unique to Japan."

Directed by The Glory director Ahn Gil-ho and written by One Litre of Tears screenwriter Satomi Oshima, the Japanese adaptation stars Koshiba as Misa Kanbe and actor Takeru Satoh as Wataru.

The series is a cross-cultural collaboration between CJ ENM Japan, Studio Dragon, and Japanese production company Shochiku, with Jiyuro Pictures handling production.

Koshiba rose to prominence after her breakout role in Kiki's Delivery Service and more recently gained critical acclaim in You Are the Apple of My Eye.

Her performance in the Japanese adaptation of "Marry My Husband" is highly anticipated by fans of both the original drama and the source novel.

The breakthrough hit version of "Marry My Husband," starring Park Min-young, was one of the highest-rated K-dramas of 2024, thanks to its compelling storyline and life-affirming transformation moments.

The Japanese version aims to recapture that success while delivering fresh emotional perspectives for a local audience.

Looking back on how she went from K-drama super fan to lead star of a high-profile adaptation, Koshiba put it this way: "I just want viewers to feel what I felt when I watched the original — that sense of suspense, of redemption, and of strength."
