2006 Hit K-Drama 'Princess Hours' Set to Get a Remake

The well-known K-drama "Princess Hours" has been confirmed to get a remake, 15 years after the original drama was broadcast and took over not only South Korea but the whole of Asia.

Originally written by Park So Hee as a manhwa (Korean comic) titled "Goong," the comics became famous back in the mid-2000s. The story was first made into a drama in 2006, with the lead actors being Yoon Eun Hye, Song Ji Hyo, Joo Ji Hoon, and Kim Jeong Hoon.

"Princess Hours" was massively successful that it became one of the pioneers that brought the Korean Wave (Hallyu) to neighboring countries.

"Princess Hours" Confirmed to Get a Remake

On March 5, Korean media outlets reported that Jae Dam Media, the management company that holds the right to the manhwa "Princess Hours," had recently signed a contract for a remake of 2006 hit K-drama with Group 8, to whom they worked with for the first drama adaptation of the Korean comic. Group 8 is also known to have produced famous dramas such as "Boys Over Flowers," "Let's Fight," "Hey Ghost," "My ID is Gangnam Beauty," and many more.

"Princess Hours" takes place in a virtual worldview that South Korea is a constitutional monarchy. It tells the story of a crown prince who found himself in an arranged marriage with an ordinary high school girl. T

he manhwa started in 2003 and was serialized for 10 years, enjoying great popularity not only in Korea but also in Japan. Not to mention, the Korean comic became a million-seller in both countries!

In addition, it has been published in more than 10 international countries including France, Thailand, and Taiwan.

On top of that, 2006 hit K-drama "Princess Hours" was also made into a musical and novel. In particular, the musical version was performed in Japan. It will even have new drama adaptations in other nations like China, Thailand, and Mexico.

Meanwhile, the drama was so popular in Korea that it achieved the highest viewership rating, peaking 28.3% and so ending up as the tenth most popular television series in the country back in 2006. Due to its success, the K-drama had a spin-off series titled "Prince Hours" ("Goong S"), which aired the following year.

Also, through this drama, Yoon Eun Hye and Ju Ji Hoon who acted as the female and male protagonists of "Princess Hours" have established themselves as splendid actors.

Hwang Nam Yong, the CEO of Jae Dam Media, commented on the remake of "Princess Hours." He said that it's crucial to continue creating new projects, but it is also important from an intellectual property point of view to maintain their existing works.

"The new version of 'Princess Hours' will become a significant case in this new IP 'boom," he remarked.
