There's no doubt why Kim Hae Sook is among the beloved K-drama mothers as the veteran star captivates viewers with her endearing roles.

The 66-year-old star has appeared in over a hundred K-dramas and films with most of them playing "ajumma" which means aunt, or "halmoni" or grandmother.

Interestingly, this is the reason why Kim Hae Sook has earned the title of "The Nation's Mother" for her various K-dramas portraying maternal roles.

From Bae Suzy's loving and caring grandmother in "Start-Up" to the wealthy mother of Yoo Yeon Seok in "Hospital Playlist" and of course the CEO named Park Rosa in Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye's 2014 K-drama "Pinocchio."

However, in her latest series, Kim Hae Sook portrays a totally different character.

The veteran actress took the role of the antagonist, Queen Dowager Cho in the historical K-drama "Under the Queen's Umbrella."

She is the King's mother, who dislikes her daughter-in-law, Queen Im Hwa Ryung, played by Kim Hye Soo, and her five sons, dubbing them as the palace's troublemakers.

Viewers get to see the veteran star's versatility and intensity in playing the villain role.

With her decades-long career, after making a debut in 1980 for a supporting role in the historical romance series "Lost Love" Kim Hae Sook has earned various awards and other achievements under her belt.

Apart from it, the 66-year-old star has gained millions throughout her entire acting career.

According to a report, Kim Hae Sook's net worth this 2022 is around $14 million, with most of her wealth coming from her work as an actress.

Kim Hae Sook on Playing Mother Roles

In a previous interview cited by Korea Times, the veteran actress opened up about how she truly feels playing mother and grandmother roles.

Kim Hae Sook revealed that she once thought that these types of characters are limiting her acting spectrum, and due to this, she felt that she "really wanted to get out of it and play someone else."

Playing one maternal role after another, the award-winning star confessed that she "felt some stress" since mother roles are "deemed as the same old things.

However, she managed to overcome these fears, portraying mother roles from a different perspective from her previous ones.

Interestingly, her view changed when she joined the cast of the 2006 movie "Sunflower" and made her think that mothers are different from one another.

"Now I say to people that mother characters are diverse enough to make a whole genre. My wish is to play all the different mothers that exist in the world," she said.

Apart from the historical series "Under the Queen's Umbrella" Kim Hae Sook played a completely different role in "Tomorrow" as the veteran actress took the role of the head of the underworld, Jade Emperor.
