‘Black Knight’ Director Addresses Viewers’ Concern Regarding Kim Woo Bin’s Smoking Scene

"Black Knight" director and screenwriter Cho Ui Seok talks about Kim Woo Bin's character in the Netflix series.

In an interview with local media outlet, Ilgan Sports, the filmmaker clarified one of the scenes that caught the viewers' attention in the six-episode K-Drama.

'Black Knight' Director Says He Used CGI in Kim Woo Bin's Scene

"Black Knight" is a dystopian series based on the webtoon of the same name.

The series is set in the year 2071 after the Earth's air became toxic, making it hard for humans to survive. Due to this, humans live through respirators.

Kim Woo Bin plays the legendary deliveryman 5-8, who serves as the lifeline of humans. He then meets Sa Wol, played by Kang You Seok, a refugee who dreams of becoming like 5-8.

Becoming a delivery man is their only hope to go against Cheonmyeong Group, led by chairman Ryu Hae Jin, played by Nam Kyung Eup, along with his son Ryu Seok, portrayed by Song Seung Heon.

Joining the cast of "Black Knight" is Esom as military intelligence major Seol Ah.

As the Netflix original series made its debut, viewers were hooked by the series' unique plot and cast lineup. However, people noticed a smoking scene with Kim Woo Bin.

As for "Black Knight" director Cho Eui Seok, he assured fans that the actor was not harmed during the production. Moreover, the filmmaker ensured that they prioritized Kim Woo Bin's well-being, knowing his health history.

As for the scene, Cho Eui Seok revealed that they used CGI to create the smoking effect.

"I couldn't let actor Kim Woo Bin smoke because of his health," adding that the scene was made 100 percent through computer graphics.

To recall, Kim Woo Bin announced his hiatus in 2017 after being diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. He then returned to Spotlight after having his first on-screen project through "Our Blues" in 2021.

It was then followed by a sci-fi fantasy movie "Alienoid" with Kim Tae Ri and Ryu Jun Yeol.

As for his K-drama comeback, he headlines Netflix's "Black Knight."

Kim Woo Bin Discusses Preparation Playing 5-8 in 'Black Knight'

In a report cited by Lifestyle Asia, the South Korean hearthrob shared that he fell in love with the story after reading the webtoon. He felt like the whole story was in a different universe and eventually "focused mostly on the script" upon getting the offer.

As his preparation, he mentioned building his character.

"I first try to get hints from the script. And then, I talk a lot with the director about the character," he said, adding, "From there, I try to imagine the parts that are not there in the script."

As for the role 5-8, Kim Woo Bin said it's the character that is "totally different" from his previous project. He mentioned about 5-8's energy and the way he see and thinks, noting the "rationale behind all of his actions and words."
