Actress and former K-pop idol Nana recalls uneasily her early vocation, conceding that she initially objected to participating in the peculiar sub-unit Orange Caramel, in spite of its eventual web sensation.

In a July 8 appearance on the YouTube channel TEO, Nana—formerly a member of After School—spoke about the pressures of working in the entertainment industry and how she navigated artistic decisions made by her management.
"I'm a very straightforward person," Nana told host Jang Do Yeon. "Because I want to keep living authentically, I feel a sense of responsibility to act properly." She added, "People who have influence should be able to acknowledge what's right and wrong and admit their mistakes."
However, Nana said her honesty hasn't always been embraced by her team. "The company tells me to hold back and be more cautious," she shared with a shy smile.
When asked whether there were times in her career when she had little control over decisions, Nana responded, "That's why I ended up doing Orange Caramel."
"Orange Caramel wasn't my style," she admitted. "After School fit me much better. I didn't even like the name Orange Caramel, so I had a lot of complaints back then."
Despite her initial reluctance, Nana said she eventually found joy in the group's unique concept, particularly during promotions for their hit single "Catallena."
"Seeing people have fun copying us made me enjoy it too," she said. "During 'Catallena,' when I shouted 'Ha!' and it became a trend, that was the moment I was really having fun."
Nana debuted with After School in 2009 and later became part of Orange Caramel, known for its playful, whimsical style and bold fashion .
The sub-unit procured widespread attention for its exceptional picture and catchy melodies.
Presently a full-time on-screen character, Nana has starred in numerous TV dramas and films, winning commendation for her acting abilities and shedding the symbol picture of her past.
Her candid remarks come at a time when many K-pop idols are becoming more vocal about the challenges they faced under tightly controlled management systems.
Nana's willingness to share her honest feelings about her career evolution resonated with fans and sparked discussion online.
While the Orange Caramel era may not have aligned with her personal tastes, Nana's comments reflect the broader conversation surrounding artistic freedom, authenticity, and growth in the Korean entertainment industry.
