The surprising backstory to the casting of the male lead only made people more interested.

Production notes showed the first script read was set for Jan. 2 but was suddenly canceled after the initial male star got involved in controversy. The actor formally left the project on Jan. 11.

Lee discussed the difficulties of having a late casting at the press conference of the drama.

"I had little time to prepare, so the burden and sense of responsibility were heavy," he explained.

"But the director invited me before filming so I could participate in group readings and shape the character's tone and style."

Korean fans have appreciated his acting, complimenting both his professionalism and chemistry on screen with Yoona.

"You really don't know when an opportunity arises," one netizen wrote.
Another posted, "Their chemistry is so good."

The fans also pointed out Lee's previous body of work and looks.
"I watch only for the male leads...I liked him since his previous drama role...so handsome," a fan commented.
Another said, "I wondered why so many people criticized the show when the casting was first revealed. They match so well."
