Fan favorite Korean actress Lee Young Ae is in the middle of a controversy after she made a philanthropic donation that met with bitter disapproval due to political association.

Lee Young Ae had consented to give funds for the construction of a Syngman Rhee memorial when she was approached by the foundation hosting the fundraiser.
The declaration soon attracted controversy. Syngman Rhee, who initially gained power in 1919, was impeached in 1925 and then became president from 1947 to 1948.
His term of office is extremely controversial, with opponents pointing to authoritarian actions, slowing economic growth and political turmoil.
Historical records indicate that Rhee's administration saw various political rivals assassinated. They included venerated activist Kim Ku, who was assassinated by Lieutenant Ahn Doo Hee.
Ahn subsequently claimed to have confessed that he was instructed to commit the assassination by Kim Chang Ryong, an intimate supporter of Rhee.

News of Lee's donation spread rapidly on social media, sparking disappointment among many netizens.
One user wrote, "Isn't she coming out with a drama soon? By then, I'm sure this issue will be buried. She's showing her true colors. It isn't surprising but still disappointing."
Another netizen expressed frustration, saying simply, "Sigh..."
Others were more blunt in their critique. "I mean, seriously, I just found out... Wow... I hope I never see her on television again," one of them said.
Others left brief comments. "Crazy, LOL."
One critic chimed in, too, saying, "WTF?... Sigh... I'm going to avoid her. It's so disappointing.."
Another netizen commented with puzzlement, writing, "????"
Others speculated about her long-standing beliefs. "Huh? I didn't know this until now, but reading the comments, it seems she has been this type of person all along. Disappointing"
A comment stated simply, "Crazy."
Through the criticisms, Lee Young Ae continues to be one of Korea's greatest icons.
She has gained worldwide recognition as the lead actress in Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace) and for critically acclaimed performances in films like Lady Vengeance and One Fine Spring Day. Most recently, she starred in the film Walking On Thin Ice.
The scandal provides background to highlight the challenges facing celebrities when good deeds collide with controversial political histories in South Korea.
