On Jan. 25, Kim Ji-yeon shared an update on her personal social media account confirming that divorce proceedings are underway. Explaining her current situation, she said, "After running away from home, she unilaterally filed a lawsuit to take custody of the child."

She added, "As a mother, I felt I could no longer endure it," and stated, "This is the first and last time I will fight to the end and win." OSEN reported that the remarks quickly drew widespread attention online.

Kim Ji-yeon, a graduate of Hanyang University's Department of Dance, first gained public recognition through the Mnet reality program Love Catcher. She later married Jung Cheol-won, a pitcher who currently plays for the Lotte Giants, and gave birth to their son in 2024.

According to The Chosun Daily, the couple held their wedding ceremony in December last year, but announced their divorce just over a month later, surprising fans and the sports and entertainment industries alike.

In previous posts, Kim Ji-yeon publicly criticized Jung Cheol-won's role at home. Responding to a question from a fan, she commented, "I'm not home much even in the off-season, so he doesn't really know me." She added, "I'm so sorry, but I'll raise them as if their father isn't there."

She also detailed financial difficulties she claims to have faced during the marriage. Describing her spending, Kim Ji-yeon said, "Last year, I personally spent over 30 million won (USD 22,500) of my salary," and added, "I added 5 to 6 million won to the money from melting down my son's first birthday ring and bracelet to buy a 10-don gold necklace."

She further stated, "I used all my income for living expenses without any allowance, and I'm in a situation where I'm only asking for 500,000 won."

Addressing her plans to move, Kim Ji-yeon explained her reasoning. She said, "Money is always an issue no matter what you do, but fortunately, the deposit is money I saved since I was a young woman."

She then added, "Busan is really nice, but our child's face has become too well-known," concluding, "Given the current situation, I think it's right to go to Seoul for the child."
